{"id":21663,"date":"2016-02-24T16:26:34","date_gmt":"2016-02-24T10:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/project-demos.com\/sgafp\/?p=21663"},"modified":"2018-06-22T13:04:18","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T07:34:18","slug":"workshop-calls-for-curbing-illegal-wildlife-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nrsp.org.pk\/sgafp\/workshop-calls-for-curbing-illegal-wildlife-trade\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop Calls for Curbing Illegal Wildlife Trade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1528440594467{padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243; id=&#8221;blogpost&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">Published in Daily Times on February 24, 2016<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">KARACHI: World Wide Fund (WWF) Pakistan initiated a four-day consultative and capacity building workshop to develop a strategy to combat illegal wildlife trade in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">The workshop is part of the project &#8216;Combating Illegal Wildlife Trade&#8217; by establishing a national monitoring network that benefits local communities and environment, supported by USAID through its small grants and ambassador&#8217;s fund programme.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">Experts from Sindh and Balochistan Wildlife Departments, Ministry of Climate Change, Pakistan Customs, Sindh Judicial Academy and WWF-Pakistan shared the national and provincial efforts being made to combat illegal wildlife trade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">Sindh Wildlife Department Chief Conservator Saeed Akhtar Baloch emphasised that apart from controlling the illegal wildlife trade, &#8220;we also carry the moral responsibility of saving the native wildlife which is our natural heritage&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">He shared a few success stories of illegal wildlife consignment seizure including the freshwater turtle repatriation from China.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">Speaking on the occasion, Ghulam Ahmad, the director general in Directorate of Research and Training Customs, highlighted that such events also bring an excellent learning opportunity to the departments such as Pakistan Customs, &#8220;which are responsible to control illegal trade at our borders and develop synergies with other institutions working for the same cause&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">Ministry of Climate Change Wildlife Conservator Umeed Khalid pointed out that wildlife traffickers have been adopting new strategies to transport wildlife illegally, thus highlighting the need for law enforcement agencies to adopt new technologies to tackle this challenge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">WWF-Pakistan senior Biodiversity Director Rab Nawaz highlighted that the illegal wildlife trade has been recognised as the third most lucrative illegal trade falling closely behind drugs, counterfeiting and human trafficking and generates an estimated $19 billion annually.
