Khaplu valley is situated along the River Shyoke at an altitude varying from 8,400 ft to 9,300 ft above the sea level. The historic town of Khaplu is a conglomeration of a series of hamlets.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Khaplu Palace was built in1840, and is the finest surviving example of a royal residence in Baltistan. Its significance lies in its cultural importance and in its quality as a building, aesthetically and as an example of traditional building typology. Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan (AKCSP) a non-profit organization established in 1991 took the initiative of renovating and restoring the palace and other buildings and spaces around it which were in shambles since 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">INITIATIVE<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">AKCSP approached USAID\u2019s Small Grants and Ambassador\u2019s Fund Program with a proposal to establish Balti folk exhibition area within the Khaplu Palace to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">Create and tap income generating opportunities to manage heritage assets in a sustainable manner<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">Collect, safeguard and display artifacts of historic and artistic importance from Baltistan that are in danger of being lost to illegal export, sold otherwise, vandalized, and\/or lost to decay, degradation and lack of recognition of their worth;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">Depict the history, timeline, social system, lifestyle and traditional cultural forms of the Balti people especially the regions links and influences via a strand of the Silk Road network.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">Build awareness on local culture and heritage among the local population generating pride, identity and self-confidence<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">Provide authentic experience for visitors to the area.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">In order to create opportunities for local artists to display their work in the gallery and to promote the cultural heritage, the U.S Ambassador\u2019s Fund program awarded a grant of USD 27,589 from Sept 2012 to June 2013 to house these important sources of history and culture in a dedicated space within the palace.<\/p>\n<h3>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">RESULT<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 23px;\">These artifacts are the centre-piece of the attraction of the palace.
