SOS provides orphans and abandoned children a home, good nurturing and a fair chance in life. The children remain in SOS care until they are able to lead independent lives. SOS Children’s Village, H-11, Islamabad was established in July 2011 and is presently supporting 92 children (50 boys, 42 girls) who are living on its premises along with 13 mothers. Most of these children belong to Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK), orphaned by the devastating 2005 earthquake. Besides taking care of their daily needs, SOS also encourages the children living on its premises to pursue their education and provides them with every possible support in this regard. One of the many challenges these children face upon leaving the SOS Village, is a shortcoming in their English speaking skills which results in difficulties when competing for academic and professional positions against students and children coming from more stable and privileged backgrounds. Their natural deficiency in this arena is often a result of their varied and tumultuous backgrounds and inconsistent educational experience prior to entering the SOS community.

INITIATIVE

In order to meet this deficiency and groom the students from an earlier age, SOS Children’s Village approached USAID’s Small Grants and Ambassador’s Fund program with an initiative to improve the English language skills (written, spoken, understanding) of children, mothers and staff of SOS Children’s Village Islamabad. With a grant of USD 65,430 under U.S. Ambassador’s Fund program, from Nov 2012 to April 2013, SOS established an English Language Lab at the SOS Village Islamabad premises.

RESULT

This laboratory equipped with 23 computers is providing English language coaching classes to all the students (50 boys, 42 girls) at SOS from playgroup to Grade 10, using specialized English language software. Besides, it will also be used by existing staff of SOS Village Islamabad and 13 mothers (caretakers of children) to improve their English language skills. The English language lab will not only increase the confidence level and communication skills of the children but would also help them in securing admission in colleges/universities and competing for jobs in the future.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1528363439638{padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/1″ id=”blogpost”][vc_column_text] CHALLENGE SOS Children’s Villages of Pakistan is affiliated with SOS-Kinderdorf International which is the largest orphan care charity in the world, operating in 133 countries and serving over 25 million children.
