USAID Mission Director Mr. John Groarke visited LUMS along with Activity Manager Mr. Wasim Ashraf and Communication Specialist Ms. Arshia Bano on Thursday, May 12th, 2016. The delegation arrived around 11:15 AM and departed at 12:15 PM. The delegation was welcomed by Dean Prof. Shahid Massod, Project Lead Prof. Dr. Murtaza Taj, Prof. Dr. Naveed Ashraf from department of Computer Sciences, Director TPI Mr. Ali Inam, and Engagement Manger Ms. Mette Hrtmeyer from Technology for People Initiative (TPI) and Mr. Rashid Makdoom from Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
After brief introduction, Prof. Dr. Murtaza Taj enlightened that the modus operandi of the project and its significance. During his presentation Mr. Taj explained that this project is unique because Pakistan is second country in Asia who is using technology for culture and heritage preservation after India with cooperation of USAID Ambassador’s Funds Program (AFP). Furthermore, he highlighted the salient accomplishments of the project and its overall impact regarding digital preservation of cultural heritage and extraordinarily valuable cultural heritage of Pakistan. They also emphasized and appraised the cooperation and hard work of the partner organization i-e CyArk and AKDN.
Mr. Taj added that during scanning of the sites it revealed that it is too much time consuming for instance during scanning of Drawer Fort they have spent several weeks to get the site scanned. Therefore, now they have planned to planned to incorporate drone technology to scan the sites more effective and efficiently LUMS project team described who digital scanner works to USAID team.
USAID Mission Director and team was very happy with project overall performance and also request to submit proposal of attachment of drone with scanner. The meeting was finished after group photo on 12:15 PM.
