PESHAWAR: Capacity building of teachers of both private and government schools was a must to help improve education standards in the country.

These views were shared by representatives of different organisations while speaking at a function here.

The event was arranged by Peace Education and Development Foundation to mark the completion of USAID small grants and ambassador’s fund programme, which helped promote reading skills in 10 different schools in the provincial capital.

Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director PEAD Sameena Imtiaz said the ceremony did not mark the completion of a project but the commencement of a collaboration between parents and teachers for a vital investment in both establishing a culture of reading and improving the quality of education.

“I praise the provincial government, teachers, writers and parents for playing their leading part in the success of this programme,” she added.

The capacity building programme, she said had improved the quality of teaching and assessment of reading through building the capacity of teachers, setting up reading corners and conducting interactive reading sessions. The project also helped sensitise the community to the importance of reading through an awareness raising campaign.

Assistant director elementary and secondary education Gul Raj stated that they wanted to ensure that girls were equally prepared for any future challenge and were ready to play an important role for the nation. She also acknowledged the contribution of the foundation to improving the quality and access of education in Peshawar.

Member of KP Textbook Board Syed-ul-Rahman said education played vital role in socioeconomic development of any nation and raised the productivity and efficiency of individuals. He said the project helped reinforce a national culture of reading in classrooms, communities and homes.
